FAQ on Microneedling

7th August 2018

Microneedling is an incredibly advanced therapy treatment in which the skin is pierced thousands of times in a short space of time, through the use of tiny needles which are placed onto the skin in multiple directions. This act of minimal skin damage triggers the skin’s natural regeneration process, meaning skin is healed. This treatment has proven very successful in treating acne scarred skin, cellulite, wrinkles and stretchmarks. The most popular way of carrying out this treatment, is with the use of a Dermaroller. This is a rolling wheel which has lots of tiny needles. You simply roll the wheel over the areas you wish to treat. The needles penetrate the skin deeply enough to trigger the regeneration process.

So, you have the most information as possible on this treatment, we’ve answered some of the most commonly asked questions regarding Microneedling and the Dermaroller application.

  • Does using the Dermaroller for Microneedling treatment hurt?

Absolutely not. The needles on the 0.5mm Dermaroller are designed to penetrate the skin, but not damage the area in any way. At least enough to cause pain. The larger the needles of the Dermaroller, the higher the chance the patient will feel some discomfort, so it’s recommended that numbing cream be applied before application of a larger than standard needle. But this will all be discussed in your initial consultation before treatment so if you have any questions regarding a numbing agent, we encourage you to discuss them during your consultation.

  • Will Microneedling cause a permanent change in skin colour?

Discolouration in the skin is exceptionally rare! It can sometimes occur if a Dermaroller is used too often, which causes inflammation in the skin. Temporary skin colour change however is perfectly normal. As the Dermaroller is rolled across the skin, it breaks down old collagen fibers. If the patient’s skin tone was uneven prior to treatment, then patches of colour change may appear post treatment. Again, this is perfectly normal, and this will fade.

If you are concerned about any skin discolouration, Vitamin C based products will help to brighten your skin.

  • Can a Dermaroller be used on any part of the body?

The face, neck and body have been tested and confirmed safe to apply with a Dermaroller. However, we actively discourage the use of the Dermaroller on the lips and eyelids. Due to the sensitivity of those areas, there is a high chance of damage.

  • Are there any side effects of Microneedling?

One of the best things about Microneedling treatment is the lack of side effects and downtime required post treatment. Immediately after the session, the skin of the treated area will appear flushed, similar to moderate sunburn. It is possible you may also feel skin tightness in the area, and a mild sensitivity to the touch. But all of these side effects pose no risk to your health and will only last 24-36 hours. During this time, it is very important to use protection against UVA and UVB rays, due to the sensitivity of the skin in the treated area.

  • How many treatments should I have?

The number of recommended treatments will depend on your skin’s condition and the result hoped for. Usually, a course of 3 sessions is enough to achieve a smoother and younger appearance. The treatment can be repeated with a limit, every 6-8 weeks. Also, although the initial wounds will close within an hour post treatment, the collagen formation can continue for up to 12 months following the Microneedling treatment.

  • When will I see the results of Microneedling?

As the treatment is relying on the skin’s natural skin regeneration process, there is no set date for everyone to see results. However, the majority of clients will see results within 6 weeks post treatment.
